Cut River Dam
NOTICE: The County Commissioners opened the Cut River Dam September 8, 2008, to facilitate lowering Higgins Lake to the legal winter level. The dam opening was accomplished in measured stages to minimize impact to the Cut River.
Due to the severe shoreline erosion that occurred around the lake in Spring of 2008, the HLPOA initiated proceedings to amend the legal winter level down an additional six inches. Early in 2009, the legal winter level was amended down three inches. The actual lake level at the end of November was three inches below winter legal level, and in December, as it usually does, the lake level rose to a level above the previous legal winter level. It is hoped that a lower winter level will prevent the severe ice push and erosion in the spring that Higgins Lake property owners have been experiencing.
A lake level committee consisting of the County Commissioners, HLPOA, HLIB, DEQ, DNR, Fisheries, USGS, and other interested agencies will continue to study this important erosion issue and make recommendations to protect the lake.
